Sustainable Water Treatment with Induced Bank Filtration

چکیده
This study demonstrates that an induced bank filter (IBF) system can treat raw water polluted with Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. Similar to riverbank filtration (RBF), or reversed relies on natural processes clean water, including through layers of allochthone alluvial sediments and a bioactive layer forms top the after ripening period. At site, located in Southwestern India, villagers rely mountain spring for their supply. Although generally high quality, contains E. bacteria (up ~2000 MPN/100 mL). Raw diverted from this was gravity-fed into IBF system, which consisted (1) flow regulator, (2) pre-filter (3) actual filter. Designed constructed based pilot testing prototype filters, full-scale (5 m by 7 2 m) built its performance maintenance requirements were studied during both monsoon season dry season. The data show significantly improved quality. Turbidity concentrations reduced below detection limit (approximately 2.5 log unit reduction). During peak (August), present effluent storm destroyed cover tank. construction costs documented. Extrapolated over 10-year period, cost 3 10 times lower than reverse osmosis supplied truck, respectively. be part affordable supply rural villages mountainous terrain where conventional RBF systems cannot installed other treatment technologies are out financial reach.

Home water treatment by direct filtration with natural coagulant.
Seeds of the plant species Strychnos potatorum and Moringa oleifera contain natural polyelectrolytes which can be used as coagulants to clarify turbid waters. In laboratory tests, direct filtration of a turbid surface water (turbidity 15-25 NTU, heterotrophic bacteria 280-500 cfu ml(-1), and fecal coliforms 280-500 MPN 100 ml(-1)), with seeds of S. potatorum or M. oleifera as coagulant, produce...

-The interactions between organic matter, bacterial biomass, enzyme activities and environmental factors were studied during bank filtration of humus-rich lake water. The exoenzymatic //-glucosidase, phosphatase and alanine-aminopeptidase activities in water were measured in vitro as release of fluorescing degradation products from methylumbelliferyl substrates. The total enzymatic decompositio...
متن کاملEnhanced performance of crumb rubber filtration for ballast water treatment.
Waste-tire-derived crumb rubber was utilized as filter media to develop an efficient filter for ballast water treatment. In this study, the effects of coagulation, pressure filtration and dual-media (gravity) filtration on the performance of the crumb rubber filtration were investigated. The removal efficiencies of turbidity, phytoplankton and zooplankton, and head loss development were monitor...
متن کاملCrumb rubber filtration: a potential technology for ballast water treatment.
The removal of turbidity, particles, phytoplankton and zooplankton in water by crumb rubber filtration was investigated. A substantial reduction was achieved. Of the three variables, filter depth, media size and filtration rate, media size had the most significant influence. Smaller media size favored higher removal efficiency of all targeted matter. There was no apparent relationship between r...
متن کاملEffect of flood-induced chemical load on filtrate quality at bank filtration sites
Riparian municipal wells, that are located on riverbanks, are specifically designed to capture a portion of the river water through induced infiltration. Runoff from agricultural watersheds is found to carry enormous amounts of pesticides and nitrate. While the risk of contamination for a vast majority of sites with small-capacity vertical wells is low, potential exists for medium to large capa...
